The Health and Wellness Center promotes the physical and psychological health of the Agahozo-Shalom community through its clinic and counseling units. Staffed by nurses and social workers, the clinic provides basic health care services to the Village, as well as physiological and psychological support.
Our nurses and social workers conduct a full intake assessment on all students shortly after they arrive at ASYV, testing for such chronic conditions as HIV. Individual evaluations are then conducted on an on-going basis, in order to create and maintain current treatment plans. The clinic also delivers health education, covering such topics as personal hygiene, diet, exercise, sex education, malaria prevention, and HIV/AIDS.
One social worker is also assigned to each grade. In this capacity, they work with our family mamas to identify students who may need additional support. Our social workers focus on enhancing the psychological well-being of Agahozo-Shalom community members through individual and group counseling sessions, life skills education and ongoing advocacy. Strategies to address and ameliorate PTSD/trauma, panic disorder, phobias, chronic anxiety, and depression are regularly employed to help our kids cope in a practical way by changing mistaken beliefs, overcoming negative self-talk, and practicing relaxation on a daily basis.
