We use our farm to decrease costs, produce environmentally sustainable food, and provide our students with a host of educational experiences and life skills. The farm provides food for the Village (about 30% of the food consumed at ASYV comes from here), offers students hands-on, educational opportunities in farm work and methodology, and supports the Village financially through harvest sales.
A variety of crops are produced by our farm, including: Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, eggplant, squash, green beans, tomatoes, pineapple, watermelon, peanuts, bananas, avocados, coffee, plantains, cabbage, and mangoes. We also have 21 Friesian cows, that produce milk for the students' breakfast porridge. Every Saturday morning, our students work on the farm in order to gain valuable and highly relevant hands-on experience; over 80% of Rwanda's population is dependent on agriculture. With the skills our kids gain at ASYV, they will be able to help bring modern farming techniques to the general Rwandan population.
