asyv's 10th anniversary

A look back at the last decade

This year, for the 10th anniversary of The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village's groundbreaking, we look back on the people who helped shape ASYV into the holistic community and home it is today.

We invite you to share your own memories of the Village to be featured here and to check back for updates throughout the year!

spotlight on nir lahav, first village director (2008-2010)

Nir joined the Agahozo-Shalom team in 2008. A successful businessman with academic degrees from several universities including Tel Aviv University Law School and Pomona College in California, Nir opted to enter the non-profit world.
While acting as Interim Director of Agahozo-Shalom, Nir, his wife and two of his three children resided at the Village. His wife served as a volunteer doctor in the Village clinic. In addition, two of Nir’s children attended school in the Village while his oldest son returned to Israel to enroll in the army after living at the Village for six months.

Spotlight on Tanya fredman, art fellow (2008-2009)

Tanya Fredman remembers when the first students arrived in the Village. “Nobody knew what to expect,” she says looking back. “[ASYV] was like some kind of paradise.”

Now an Arts Educator at Yemin Orde Youth Village in Israel, Tanya served as an ASYV Fellow during the first cohort of Village volunteers back in 2008-2009.

Tanya was a senior at Brandeis University when she first found out about Agahozo-Shalom. “Someone sent me a YouTube clip of Anne [Heyman] speaking about the Village and Yemin Orde and I was blown away. I connected with Sifa [Nsengimana] and I said, ‘I really want to come and volunteer.’”
