Our Class of 2021 Has a Name!

March 23, 2018

The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village’s Class of 2021 has chosen its name: Umucyo!

Umucyo is a Kinyarwanda word for clarity or to be enlightened. Already embracing the spirit of ASYV in their first year, our Enrichment Year students selected this name because they want to be a light for the Village and all of Rwanda.

In addition to choosing a name for their grade, each of our newly formed student families chose a unique name that will be theirs forever. Empowered to carefully research their selection, each family identified a late hero that will be their namesake and inspiration.

The heroes our students chose exemplify what it means to be courageous and stand up for what you believe in - and we know the students in these families will follow their heroes' lead!

We are pleased to announce the Class of 2021 Village Families:

The Louis Armstrong Family - chosen for breaking racial barriers through entertainment.

The Wangari Maathai Family - chosen for standing up for her beliefs in the name of peace in Kenya and around the world.

The Septima Clark Family - chosen for her civil rights activism as the "Mother of the Movement."

The Miriam Makeba Family - chosen for her advocacy against apartheid and her influence through music.

The Sojourner Truth Family - chosen for her courage to escape slavery and her efforts to end it.

The Aloys Bigirumwami Family - chosen for his humility and efforts to promote peace in Rwanda.
