Wake Up - 5:30 a.m.

An ASYV student’s day begins at 5:30 a.m. in their family homes. They wake up, wash, pack up gear for the day and head to the dining hall with their brother or sisters. If they have extra time in the morning, they can relax with their family before leaving for breakfast.

Breakfast -

6:15 - 7:00 a.m.

Breakfast — usually consisting of porridge and bread — starts at 6:15 a.m. in the dining hall. This is usually the quietest meal because, like most teenagers, ASYV students need some time to fully wake up. When the kids finish their meal, they walk up the hill to school.

School - 7:00 a.m.

The school day at ASYV begins with a morning assembly at 7:00 a.m. in the school’s courtyard. After assembly, the students go to their first class of the day. School lasts from 7:00-3:30 with two scheduled breaks in the day — bread break and lunch.

Bread Break –

10:00 - 10:15 a.m.

It’s time for a snack. Studying is hard work and by mid-morning the students need a break to talk with their friends and eat some bread (baked here in the Village).

Lunch

1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

After a morning full of learning, ASYV students need to relax, talk with friends, and enjoy a healthy meal. Lunch is a traditional Rwandan meal — usually consisting of rice, potatoes and a vegetable and bean sauce. Some days have special additions — like Salad Mondays and Two Egg Tuesdays.

Enrichment Programs (EPs) –

4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Basketball, football (soccer), volleyball, guitar, piano, photography… Enrichment Programs are a way for students to develop skills and confidence outside the classroom. Students have one Art EP and one Sport EP and attend each once per week.

Dinner -

7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Dinner, like lunch, is a traditional Rwandan meal. Afterwards, clubs and student groups often hold meetings in the library or on the balcony.

Family Time.jpg

Family Time –

8:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Family time is when every family meets together in their home for an activity or discussion. Family time can be: a discussion of family and Village expectations, games, a family debate, a guest speaker, a movie night or anything else that will bring a family closer together.

Bedtime.jpg

Bedtime –

9:30 or 10:00 p.m.

Family Mamas determine what time their boys or girls should be in bed. Bedtime depends on what day of the week it is, when Family Time ended, and which grade the students are in. Mamas usually want their family in bed around 10:00 so they will be well rested for another full day.
