Mastercard Foundation

Since our founding, ASYV has aspired to bring our model of healing, education, and love to kids throughout Rwanda—and one day the region and world. Now, we have begun to fulfill that vision, thanks to a transformative new grant from the Mastercard Foundation funding the Educational Resilience Program (ERP). Through the ERP, ASYV is training teachers nationwide in digital skills, student-centered learning, and life skills topics such as sexual and reproductive health and mental health.

We are particularly excited to see this program begin. From all the data that we have here in Rwanda, we see that a lot of students will be joining the workforce from secondary education, hence the importance of equipping them with the right skills, right tools, and mindset to be ready for the world of work. We strongly believe teachers are at the forefront of this transition towards the use of modern technology in education.
— Rica Rwigamba, Mastercard Foundation’s Head of Country Rwanda, during an August 2021 event celebrating the launch of the ERP

After just one year, the depth of the ERP's impact on individual teachers and students and the Rwandan education system as a whole is clear.

In my class, there was a learner who used to perform poorly in all tests, but after the training at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, I tried to be closer to the child and talked to her. I identified her problem. I started to help her through guidance and counseling, and now she is emotionally stable, and her performance is increasing.

We are grateful to the Mastercard Foundation for their investment and belief in our model. Their incredible vision, guidance, and insight have made possible the work we are doing together to bring a pivotal part of ASYV into every Rwandan school.
